Power Market

Many countries around the world operate electricity markets. Korea has already operated a Cost-Based Pool(CBP) since 2001. The power market where a single buyer(KEPCO) and a number of sellers(power generating companies) participate is operated by KPX.

The competition was introduced in generation sector only. KEPCO purchases power instead of consumers from the market and delivers to them. In many other developed countries where retail competition has been applied, however, consumers are able to choose from various retailers.

Tasks related to Master's Space

  • Continuous supplementation and modification is necessary for the power market.
  • Master's Space has performed several consultations including analyses of market system improvement and its impact on market participants.

Demand Response

The concept of Demand Side Management(DSM) began with aims of reducing electricity demand after the oil shocks in 1970s. Introduction of the competitive power market makes more weight on Demand Response(DR) rather than DSM which means that the initiative has been moving from the regulator to the private sector.

Several incentive-based demand management programs are in operation by KEPCO and KPX. Also, after the amendment to the Electricity Law in 2014, DR resources are able to sell their reduced demand in the electricity market like supply resources.

  • Master's Space participated in the design of Smart Demand Response Market.
  • The situation that generation resource and DR compete in the power market is able to be simulated in the optimization software which has user friendly interface.

HEMS, BEMS

For the purpose of using electricity more efficiently, using IT has been studied. Especially in DR market, IT can make resources response to the electricity price.

HEMS(Home Energy Management System) and BEMS(Building Energy Management System) are the practice of controlling procedures, operations and equipment that contribute to the energy use in home and building each.

Tasks related to Master's Space

  • Master's Space has developed a optimization program for cooling units based on the price and temperature. It is also developed to be able to participate in the power market.

Microgrid

A microgrid is a group of interconnected loads and distributed energy resources (DERs) within clearly defined electrical boundaries that acts as a single controllable entity with respect to the grid. In recent years, researches into the microgrid of large-scale power systems is under way, so that it provides good solution to supply power in case of an emergency and power shortage during power interruption in the main grid.

  • Master's Space has developed an optimization program for a microgrid considering small generators, solar energy generation and batteries to provide power at minimal costs.

Smart Grid

A smart grid is an electrical grid which includes a variety of operational and energy measures including smart meters, smart appliances, renewable energy resources, and energy efficient resources. The Smart Grid represents a platform that provides various functions to enable trading based on electric power market, reflecting all major issues of electric power industry such as electric cars, battery, DR, Microgrid, BEMS and HEMS.

Currently, a Smart Grid Demonstration Complex is being built in Gujwa-eup, Jeju, and various resources such as electric cars, wind power, solar power, and DR are being traded through the demonstration complex market.

Completion of Government Smart Grid Construction
  1. Phase 1(2010~2012) : Verification of new technology through construction and operation of demonstration complex
  2. Phase 2(2013~2020) : Expansion of the smart grid to wide area & completion of consumer side intellectualization
  3. Phase 3(2021~2030) : Completion of the nation-wide smart grid through the whole power grid

Tasks related to Master's Space

  • Master's Space participated in the design of Jeju Smart Grid Demonstration Complex.
  • An optimization engine that optimizes power supplies to minimize costs is currently being used in day ahead market of Demonstration Complex.
  • Also we participated in the system development of bidding, metering and settlement system for participants of Demonstration Complex.
